Hiking to ancient Newari villages

Bandipur tour

Our Bandipur tour is a fantastic spot to stop-off on the way from Kathmandu to Pokhara (or vice versa) - not to be confused with Bandipur the nature reserve in India! Step back in time and enjoy the relaxed atmosphere of this historic mountain village. Tourists are scarce and the locals, the Newari, are very friendly and welcoming. The day after you arrive your Bandipur tour guide will take you on a tour through the surrounding countryside to one of the nearby villages, taking a break for a delicious picnic on the way. Sitting at the top of a mountain, you'll be surrounded by the majestic peaks of the Himalayas.

Day 1: Arrival in Bandipur Nepal

This Bandipur tour begins in town, so, if you're coming from Kathmandu or Pokhara you'll leave early in order to arrive in the early afternoon. If you like, we'll arrange a private car for you - just ask one of our travel specialists. You'll immediately feel like you've stepped into a time machine - the streets are narrow and cobbled and lined on both sides with the traditional wooden Newari houses. Curious faces will peek out of windows and doors as you pass through the quaint old streets.

On your Bandipur tour, you'll stay at a welcoming mountain hotel for the next 2 nights. The hotel as a colonial atmosphere, a spectacular view and great food to boot. It's surrounded by a wonderfully aromatic pine forest and hidden among the trees you'll find a sparkling pool (although it is sometimes empty, so you'll have to keep your fingers crossed).

Bandipur tour - Enjoying a local meal

When you've satisfied your appetite with a tasty lunch you'll have time on your Bandipur tour to explore your surroundings. The centre of Bandipur is a scenic 15-minute walk from your hotel and on the way you will see farmers working the land with oxen and old women shuffling by with huge baskets on their backs. The stubborn goats and balding chickens will be completely unfazed by your presence. Looking around, it will be hard to imagine that Bandipur was once an important trading town on the route from India to Tibet.

The Bindabasini Mandir temple is well worth a visit. It is the home of Bandipur's patron goddess Durga and decorated with intricate woodwork carvings. After this, you'll walk on through dusty streets to the Thani Mai Temple, perched on a hilltop to the west of the city with a fantastic view over the mountains and the town itself. In the evening, you can head to one of the small local restaurants in the centre, where you'll always be served a very warm welcome.

Day 2: Bandipur tour - Guided walk from Bandipur to Ramkot

On the morning of Day Two of your Bandipur tour, you can have breakfast al fresco and look out across the snowy peaks of the Annapurna range. As the morning sun climbs higher, the mist slowly rises from the mountains.

After breakfast, you'll be picked up by an english-speaking local guide for your walk to the village of Ramkot. As soon as you leave Bandipur, the hills become greener and more rugged with some steep cliffs, rocks and beautiful terraces. Excited children will follow you shouting 'Namaste'!

You'll arrive in Ramkot a couple of hours later. Walking in the fresh mountain air will help you build up an appetite, so it's time to find a good spot for a picnic. As the guide lays out the picnic spread, you can lie back in the grass and relax for a bit. Crisp air, birds chirping around you - this is mountain life at its very best.

After lunch, you'll wander back to Bandipur. You'll arrive at the end of the afternoon, leaving you plenty of time to explore the town. At this stage of your Bandipur tour, you may just want to chill out on your balcony with a good book, enjoy the peace and quiet and savour the view...

Day 3: End of Bandipur tour

After breakfast the Bandipur tour ends, and you will be free travel on to Pokhara, perhaps begin one of our Annapurna trekking modules or head in the other direction for the Kathmandu valley tour, or set off on a wildife adventure to see elephants and rhinos in Chitwan Nepal.
