Nepal Charity Project - Make a difference

Nepal Charity Project - Tamsarya Foundation

Nepal Travel Plan supports a local village charity project as part of the Tamsarya Foundation.

Not far from the Chitwan National Park close to the village of Kawasoti, an area of what was once barren wasteland is slowly being transformed into a thriving local community. Children run around playing, a little further on fresh bread is being baked at the local bakery. Across the stream over the bridge local trades are being taught and in a couple of small houses teenagers are following classes or doing their homework. Local villagers can walk in and out of the new medical centre and a dental practice.

The Tamsarya Foundation was founded by Trees van Rijsewijk, a Dutch woman who in 1985 bade farewell to her comfortable life in the Netherlands and set off on an epic journey by bike through the Himalayas. On her cycling expedition in Nepal she was struck by the intense poverty in many of the local villages. In Nepal tuberculosis and other diseases are still a common cause of death and as a result many small children are orphaned and left to fend for themselves.

Trees decided to adopt the little girl Kumari and spent several years living in a Nepali village while fighting with the local authorities for adoption rights. During this time Trees took care of many more small children, some of which she was able to house in local orphanages.

This gave her the idea to set up her own orphanage. She wanted to do this in such a way that the children would stay connected to their local area where they would eventually grow up. The children in the orphanage are therefore raised and educated in the Nepali tradition. With the help of students of the technical university an orphanage was built to house the first group of children and provide them with a safe haven to grow up in.

The children are all individually sponsored, although they are not aware of this and all children are treated equally. The goal of the orphanage is to raise and educate the children so that when they are old enough they can return to their native area and play an active part in their local community.

A donation will directly contribute this Nepal charity project. The Tamsarya Foundation has very little overhead costs which means donations go directly towards the local community. If you wish, you can support the project by indicating on the booking form that you wish to donate a one off contribution of £5. We'll add that money to the cost of your trip and deposit 100% of it into the foundation's account.
